Minecraft has one of the longest and most interesting development histories in all of gaming history. Mojang is currently celebrating the game's 15th anniversary, just to show how long the game has been in development. There have been a lot of different versions of the game released over the years, with the most important of them arguably being the game's first official release.

The first official release of the game was on November 18th, 2011. Interestingly, the official name of 1.0 is 1.0.0. The name 1.0 comes from the incorrect label within the game's official launcher. If that wasn't confusing enough, this version of the game was originally known as Beta 1.9, and all of its pre-release versions have this name label instead.

The first official release was a truly monumental Minecraft update. This version of the game is responsible for adding several features, mobs, items, and mechanics that have since become iconic.

For example, this version introduced all of Minecraft's potion brewing. This includes brewing stands, netherwart, as well as blaze powder. This powder is made from blaze rods, the unique drop of blaze mobs, which were also introduced in this version of the game.

Speaking of blaze powder, it is required to craft the eyes of Ender, which are needed to open the stronghold portal to Minecraft's end dimension, where the final fight against the Ender dragon is found, along with the beautiful ending poem. All of this content was introduced in 1.0.

That's still not it, though. 1.0 also introduced the game's hostile-mob-free mushroom biome, along with the mushrooms that call the biome home. As for passive mobs, the ability to breed mobs was also introduced here.

While the system wasn't as refined as it is now, enchanting was first added to the game in 1.0. Enchanting originally required 50 levels, rather than the 30 that current enchanting setups do, and would consume all 50 of those levels. This made enchanting a much more time-consuming process, as it took much longer to build up the required levels.

Villagers are probably 1.0's most iconic addition. Minecraft villager trading wouldn't come until 1.3.1, but villages and their inhabitants were first introduced when the game was first released. Other mobs added with 1.0 are magma cubes and snow golems.
