Minecraft has a ton of different mobs and the variety of these is astounding. From dangerous wolves that can be tamed and turned into loyal pets to dangerous creepers who should be avoided at all costs, the options are endless. While most of these mobs have some game rules based on which they spawn, the cat mobs have some interesting spawn mechanics. So where do cats spawn in the game?

In this article, we will look at all the places where cats can be found. On top of it, we will mention all the rules that are at play while deciding where and how cats spawn in Minecraft. Let’s get started.

Both in Java and Bedrock Edition, cats spawn in two specific regions; villages and Swamp huts. But some conditions must be met before the cats can spawn in these regions.

For example, a village can only spawn untamed cats when there are at least five beds that have been claimed by villagers. All these beds also have to be within 48 blocks of each other. However, here’s something interesting: While the village cat may spawn with a random appearance, black cats can only spawn during a full moon. This is valid for both the Bedrock and Java Edition of Minecraft.

As for normal stray cats, the Bedrock Edition follows a slightly different ruleset. The game will check and add a stray cat to ensure that there is one cat per four owned beds, leading to a maximum of five cats for 20 beds. The game considers kittens and even player-tamed cats for the calculation.

Coming to the second spawn location for cats, huts can be found in the swamp biome, which also houses the newly added bogged mob. Usually, only one untamed black cat spawns inside the swamp huts, and the cats never despawn. However, additional cats can spawn if there are grass blocks present inside the bounding box of the swamp hut.

Another interesting thing to note is that in the Java Edition, when any other cat spawns either from spawn eggs or commands (without specifying cat type), it is always a black cat.

So if players are looking to get cats, the best option for them would be to find a nearby village that is big enough (with multiple claimed beds) to spawn cats or kittens. Players can also breed different cats in Minecraft to spawn cats with unique coats.
