Many experienced Minecraft players have started playing the game on multiplayer servers, as collaborating with other players provides a unique new experience in the game. On servers, the users' skins were the only way to add individuality to the player models, but these get mostly covered up by the player's armor and elytra. Not too long ago, the developers realized this situation and introduced armor trim smithing templates with the Trails & Tales update.

These items can be used to apply specific patterns or trims to the player's armor pieces, allowing for more customizability in terms of looks. Each armor trim smithing template has distinct designs and needs to be acquired through exploration. In this article, we discuss which is the rarest armor trim in Minecraft, its whereabouts, and how to use armor trims.

Armor trim smithing templates are relatively rare items that are uncraftable and can mostly be obtained through the loot chests of various structures. The Silence armor trim is the rarest armor trim in Minecraft, with a mere 1.2% chance of being present in an ancient city chest.

Surviving in an ancient city is hard in itself, let alone exploring all the chests. On top of all that, the few players who can go through all the chests have such little chance of finding the template, making it a lot harder to acquire than the low probability might suggest.

How to find an ancient city

Ancient cities are underground structures where players will find warden-summoning sculk blocks. Minecraft does not have a map to help players easily navigate to the ancient cities. However, the structure itself is not very rare and can be found by simply exploring the underground Overworld at Y level -51.

Once a city has been located, players need to silence their footsteps by walking, as the sculk sensors upon detecting vibrations can trigger the sculk shriekers, blocks capable of summoning the warden upon activation.

Once the player has acquired an armor trim smithing template, all they need to apply it to a piece of armor is a smithing table and an ingot or crystal of choice. The ingot or crystal used will determine the highlight color of the trim, and the template used determines the design. For example, using an amethyst shard will result in the applied trim having a purple highlight color.

Right-clicking on the smithing table opens up its GUI, where the player needs to put the template in the first slot, the armor piece in the second slot, and the ingot/crystal in the third slot. The trimmed armor item can be collected from the last slot.
