As iconic as Minecraft's Steve character model has become, there was no guarantee it would survive through the game's early development. In fact, there were several alternate skins and models used temporarily before they were removed, leaving the recognizable Steve skin behind, eventually joined by other characters like Alex.
One of the most interesting examples of strange models seen in the title's early development is Beast Boy, which, as the name suggests, was based on the DC character of the same name, specifically the 2003 cartoon Teen Titans version.

As previously mentioned, Beast Boy's model is based on the 2003 Cartoon Network cartoon version of Teen Titans. This means he has green skin and hair, along with a purple suit.
The biggest visual difference between the two is the suit's accenting color, which was green in the game and black in the show.
Beast Boy as a mob
Beast Boy was seen as a passive Minecraft mob that could be spawned by players by hitting the "g" key, eventually giving gunpowder, feathers, and string as drops.
This means that Beast Boy actually dropped string before spiders, despite them being one of the game's oldest mobs, a testament to how old these models are.
Beast Boy's Creator
Beast Boy was added to Minecraft by British game developer and artist Hayden Scott-Baron, also known as Dock, in December of 2009. This techincally means that 2024 is also Beast Boy's 15th anniversary, a second reminder of just how long ago these models were added to the game.
Outside of Beast Boy, Dock actually created several different models for the title around this time. He also created the Rana, Steve, and Black Steve models, though they would all be removed shortly after his departure from Mojang in February 2010.
Outside of these models, he also created a logo for Minecraft that would go unused, as well as concept art for a more updated version of the Steve character model.
Dock was actually the first person ever hired onto Mojang alongside Minecraft's creator Notch. However, he left a few months later due to work-related issues and issues regarding animations. Other games he's worked on include Rollarcoaster Tycoon 3, Thrillville, and Kinectimals.
