Markus "Notch" Persson recently talked about how he could soon start working on Minecraft 2, a spiritual successor to his popular sandbox title. Mojang Studios, which Notch founded in 2009, has continued to manage Minecraft for almost 15 years now. However, they have never talked about a sequel yet. Hence, when the game's original creator hinted at a second iteration on his official X account, thousands in the community were excited.
While the idea of Minecraft 2 is an interesting one, there are two major reasons why the game might not become a reality.

Reasons why Minecraft 2 might not become a reality
Microsoft owns the Minecraft IP (intellectual property)
One of the biggest reasons why Minecraft 2 cannot become a reality is the game's ownership. When the game officially launched, all the rights for it were with Mojang, with Markus Persson at the helm of the company.
In 2014, however, Microsoft acquired Mojang for $2,500,000,000, gaining access to Minecraft's IP. After selling Mojang to Microsoft, Notch left the company. This means that he no longer has the rights to the Minecraft IP or any of its official features.
Hence, if Notch plans to create a spiritual successor of the beloved sandbox game, it will most likely not be named Minecraft 2. The only way his game can get that name is if he strikes a deal with Microsoft and collaborates with them to develop the sequel.
Notch has a history of unfinished projects
Though Markus Persson created one of the most popular games in history, his other projects did not garner similar success. Apart from Minecraft, Notch has also worked on other titles like Wurm Online and Caller's Bane.
Notch also conceived several other projects, but was never able to complete them. Most notably, he created an alternate reality space game called '0x10c' in 2012, but stopped its development in 2013.
After leaving Mojang, Notch created another game company called Rubberbrain AB, but they failed to release any games. This is why the company was eventually relaunched as Bitshift Entertainment LLC.
While Notch has recently expressed his desire to develop games again, it has been quite some time since he has successfully released a title of his own. Naturally, his history with game development raises serious questions about whether he will ever develop Minecraft 2.
