When players fall from a high place in Minecraft, they incur massive fall damage the moment they hit a solid block upon landing. The amount of fall damage also increases with the height of the fall. Naturally, this damage can even kill players if they fall from a high enough distance.

However, if players fall into a source block of water, it completely negates all the fall damage.

Hence, if players have a water bucket, they can hold it in their hands while falling, and place the water on the block that they will hit right before landing. This allows them to land in the water, nullifying any fall damage and saving their lives. Then, they can simply swim up through the waterfall to reach higher ground. This can be rinsed and repeated to reach the summit.

The same trick can be used to head down to a ravine or cave opening. Water can be placed from a bucket on a block that flows down to the caves. Then players can simply swim down to explore the underground world.
