When she’s not honing her craft on the mat, Tammi Musumeci is putting her law degree to work.

On Friday night, the older sister of ONE flyweight submission grappling world champion Mikey Musumeci will make her ONE Championship debut. She will kick off ONE Fight Night 8 on Prime Video with a submission showdown against dangerous Brazilian grappler Bianca Basilio.

Ahead of her highly anticipated debut, Musumeci sat down with the promotion to share what drives her to continue competing in BJJ despite having a successful career outside of competition.

“I've never wanted to take a break from work. The thing is, I feel like I'm the type of person that needs a lot of things going on. Even when I have no work, I need to find stuff to do. That's probably why I have stuck with jiu-jitsu, because I'm not one of these people that sit still.”

While her professional career may prevent her from pursuing BJJ full-time, Tammi Musumeci continues to evolve in the sport, satisfying her need for constant learning and growth. That desire has certainly paid off as she, like her brother Mikey Musumeci, is a multi-time IBJJF world champion, capturing medals at every belt level before turning her attention to the black belt division.

In 2019, she became an IBJJF world champion for the very first time.

Tammi Musumeci uses her dual careers as a way to take a break from one or the other

For most people, holding down one job is difficult enough when you factor in all of the other responsibilities that come with being an adult. For Tammi Musumeci, the two are a perfect fit as it keeps her constantly moving. Musumeci also revealed that her dual career allows her to essentially take a break from one or the other when needed.

“I enjoy that they’re two separate things because it gives me a break from both. [Law is] a different thing. It’s more of a mental exhaustion instead of physical, which jiu-jitsu is. But then also it makes your mind keep working, which I think helps you in jiu-jitsu because your mind is continually working.”

Tammi Musumeci will need both her physical and mental games on point this Friday night as she steps onto combat sports’ biggest global stage with a very tough opponent standing across from her. Bianca Basilio has an incredible 101-career wins to her credit and has already competed inside the Circle, giving her an advantage in experience and navigating a cage rather than an open mat.

Amazon Prime Video subscribers in North America can catch Tammi Musumeci’s promotional debut live and for free this Friday night in U.S. primetime.
