Daniel Cormier warned Colby Covington of the potential repercussions if he stays inactive.
Covington last fought in March 2022, defeating Jorge Masvidal by unanimous decision. Since then, the 34-year-old has been settling a lawsuit with Masvidal for a physical altercation outside the Octagon. As the months go by, the welterweight division continues to move on without him. During an episode of DC & RC, Cormier had this to say about ‘Chaos’:
“He won his last fight, but time has passed… Time is passing and being idle isn’t the best thing for a guy in a division that’s constantly moving. The moment Colby Covington starts to re-insert himself, he’ll be loud, he’ll be boisterous, he’ll have a lot to say, and people will start to pay attention, and right away he’s back relevant because we have not seen anyone but Kamaru Usman for a really long time solve the puzzle that is Colby Covington…”
Daniel Cormier concluded by saying:

“So, I think he will be relevant for a while, but I think he needs to get rolling again because momentum is key in this sport. When you don’t have momentum, nobody’s really checking for you and I think Colby Covington needs to make sure he doesn’t find himself in that place or he is in no man's land out on an island by himself.”
It’s not too late for Covington to quickly get back into the mix. On March 18, Kamaru Usman looks to avenge his loss to Leon Edwards for the 170-pound title, but Khamzat Chimaev and Belal Muhammad still need a top-ranked opponent. If they get matched up, ‘Chaos’ could find himself in a weird spot in the division.

Daniel Cormier believes Jorge Masvidal could be matched up against Leon Edwards if they both win their next fights
Despite losing his last three fights, two against Kamaru Usman and one against Colby Covington, Jorge Masvidal is potentially one win away from another title shot. It also helps that ‘Gamebred’ has a history with reigning champion Leon Edwards, stemming from a physical altercation in 2019.
During the same podcast episode, Daniel Cormier had this to say about Masvidal:
“We got [Kamaru] Usman vs. [Leon] Edwards again, and I also think Jorge [Masvidal] is very smart taking this [fight against Gilbert Burns] a month after Usman/Edwards because if Leon wins and he [Masvidal] wins, he might find himself fighting Leon Edwards due to the two-piece and a biscuit.”
Before worrying about a title shot, Masvidal has a tough upcoming fight against Gilbert Burns. ‘Durinho’ continues to grow his fanbase by accepting any opponent offered, and he made a statement against Neil Magny at UFC 283. Only time will tell which welterweight contender can emerge victorious in the UFC 287 co-main event.
