In the 2012 London Olympics, Anthony Joshua secured a place in the super-heavyweight division despite being a relative newcomer to the elite level of boxing. Despite facing challenges, including a tough draw against Cuban Erislandy Savón in the last 16, Joshua progressed through the rounds, defeating Zhang Zhilei in the quarterfinals to secure at least a bronze medal.

In the semi-final, despite a height disadvantage, he defeated Kazakh boxer Ivan Dychko and advanced to the Olympic final. In the closing bout, Joshua faced reigning Olympic champion Roberto Cammarelle of Italy. After conceding the first two rounds, Joshua fought back and leveled the scores, ultimately winning the bout via count-back to become the Olympic champion.
