The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation oversaw Paul vs. Diaz. The department has strict rules to curb the use of marijuana among competing athletes. Levels exceeding 50 ng/ml can result in strict punishment. Speaking to MMA Fighting, a TDLR spokesperson confirmed that the same rule would apply to Diaz's fight against Paul.
Nate Diaz passed the drug test but failed to defeat Jake Paul
Nate Diaz passed the test and entered the boxing ring on Aug. 5, 2023. Unfortunately for him, the fight didn't produce the expected results. Paul won the fight by unanimous decision, getting back in the win column after suffering his first professional boxing defeat against Tommy Fury in February that year.
'The Problem Child' knocked Diaz down multiple times in the fight and effectively countered his high-volume striking style with his power shots. After eight rounds of action, the judges scored the contest 98-91, 98-91 and 97-92 in Paul's favor. To his credit, Diaz showed his trademark durability and made the fight a lot more competitive in the later rounds.
Nate Diaz and his elder brother, Nick Diaz, have always been open about their marijuana use. Despite the challenges, Nate passed the marijuana metabolites test for the Jake Paul fight, while elder brother Nick's MMA career suffered the consequences of a failed drug test.
Nick Diaz tested positive for marijuana a few times in his professional MMA career, including his UFC 143 showdown against Carlos Condit. While a complaint for disciplinary action was filed at the time, his positive test for marijuana for the UFC 183 fight against Anderson Silva resulted in a five-year ban and a massive $165,000 penalty.
Following an appeal, the suspension and fine were reduced to 18 months and $100,000. However, the Commission's decision to hand him a lengthy suspension for marijuana was unanimously criticized in the MMA community.
