UFC 278: Usman v Edwards 2
Kamaru Usman

Kamaru Usman has been a prominent fighter in the UFC’s welterweight division for the last eight years since his Octagon debut. And over the years, Usman won the welterweight championship and made five successful title defenses out of it. Starting his professional mixed martial arts career in 2012, ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ is currently on a record of 20 wins and 3 losses. He also has 9 wins via knockout, 1 via submission, and 3 first-round knockout wins annexed to his fight resume.

Considered one of the greatest of all time in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Kamaru Usman was on a nineteen-fight win streak, including six title matches, till he faced Leon Edwards at UFC 278. Before Edwards, the 36-year-old had only lost to a fighter called Jose Caseres in 2013 at a promotion named Championship Fighting Alliance.

Moreover, Kamaru Usman was one of those rare fighters who could clearly dominate over a particular weight class in their fight tenure. Usman faced some of the biggest names in the welterweight division of the UFC and has managed to win against all of them. He lost to the current welterweight champion, Leon Edwards, in their rematch on August 20, 2022, and lost the bout via a head-kick knockout in the last round of the matchup.

However, ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ has decided to move up a weight class and fight Khamzat Chimaev for his next outing at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi. The more surprising factor about this matchup is that Usman accepted the fight eleven days before the event as the previously fixed Paulo Costa withdrew due to surgery.
