Cutelaba was born in Chisinau, Moldova, on December 14, 1993. He started training in Greco-Roman Wrestling as an adolescent besides competing in Sambo and Judo.

Ion Cutelaba made his professional mixed martial arts debut on April 5, 2012, at the CIS: Cup against Daglar Gasimov and won via first-round TKO. While fighting in the regional promotions in Eastern Europe, he amassed a record of 11 wins and one loss and signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in 2016.

Ion Cutelaba made his debut in the Ultimate Fighting Championship on June 18, 2016, against Misha Chirkonov in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada at UFC Fight Night: MacDonald vs.Thompson, Canada.
