Islam Makhachev is one of the leading superstars of the UFC. He made his professional MMA debut in August 2010 and spent his initial years in competing in multiple professional fight promotions. After compiling a record of 12 wins and no losses, Makhachev made his promotional debut in the UFC in 2015. Makhachev witnessed a meteoric rise in the company and went on to win the vacant UFC lightweight title against Charles Oliveira at UFC 280.

Early Life and Career

Islam Makhachev started his combat sports journey at his home village of Burshi, Dagestan, where he trained in combat sambo under the mentorship of Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. Makhachev tasted success in sambo before transitioning to MMA.

Makhachaev made his professional mixed martial arts debut at Tsumada Fighting Championship 4 against Magomed Bekbolatov, which he won by a unanimous decision.

Makhachev signed with M-1 and debuted at the M-1 Selection Ukraine 2010 Finals against Tengiz Khuchua. Makhachev made quick work of Khuchua and defeated him via a first-round knockout. He dominated his upcoming fights in the promotion and amassed four consecutive victories before joining the UFC.

Islam Makhachev faced Adriano Martins in his second fight in the UFC. The duo took on each other on October 3, 2016, at UFC 192 in a lightweight bout. Martins dispatched Makhachev in the first round with the help of a punch to secure a dominant victory.
