Kamaru Usman vs. Khamzat Chimaev Tale of the Tape

Kamaru Usman faced Khamzat Chimaev for the first time at UFC 294: Makhachev vs. Volkanovski 2 on October 23, 2023. This event took place at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. After 3 rounds, Chimaev was declared the winner via a majority decision.

Initially, the co-main event of UFC 294 was set to feature a middleweight bout between Chimaev and No.5 ranked contender Paulo Costa. The fight was called off as Costa withdrew from the fight due to his elbow not having fully healed from a surgery that had taken place three weeks prior. UFC’s head honcho Dana White later shocked the MMA community by announcing that the former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman had replaced Costa. White also stated that the winner of this bout will get the next title shot at the middleweight title against Sean Strickland.
