Gastelum was drawn towards mixed martial arts after an early stint with wrestling; he earned his black belt in 10th Planet Jiu-jitsu under Brian Beaumont.
Kelvin Gastelum made his professional mixed martial arts debut on December 11, 2010, against Jose Sanchez at Latin American Fighter 1: Border Wars.
