Luis Nery, a professional boxer, has a nearly undefeated career, with only one defeat on his resume out of 36 matches and a knockout percentage of 77.14% with 27 Kos. His career started with nine amateur fights, five of which were knockouts. He made his professional debut in May 2012 and went on to win in his first 18 bouts.

He faced Martín Casillas in a fight for the vacant WBC Continental bantamweight championship in 2016, winning via a unanimous decision. Against former interim super flyweight world champion David Sanchez, Nery maintained his dominance and retired Sanchez on the stool to retain his WBC Continental Americas bantamweight title.

In August 2017, Nery faced the bantamweight champion of the WBC and The Ring, Shinsuke Yamanaka, for the titles and overpowered the defending champion Yamanaka with a left cross in a thrilling fourth-round stoppage.

More than 7 million people in Japan watched this battle, which cemented Nery's standing as a formidable opponent in the boxing world. This was the period when Luis Nery got his nickname, the Spanish term "Pantera," which means "panther."

However, after the Yamanaka fight, he tested positive for zilpaterol, a banned substance, which caused controversy. Regardless, from May 2021 to May 2020, he was the WBC super bantamweight champion and also held the bantamweight titles from Ring magazine and the WBC in 2017 and 2018.

After the Yamanaka controversy, Nery was banned from fighting in Japan by the Japanese Commission, which was lifted in 2024, as Nery was scheduled to fight the undisputed champion in two weight classes, Naoya Inoue, on May 6, 2024.

Luis Nery’s Ethnicity

Luis Nery is reportedly of Latino descent; his full name is Luis Esteban Nery Hernandez, and he was born in Mexico; however, the exact ethnicity of any specific tribe or culture is unknown in relation to Nery.

Luis Nery’s Nationality

Luis Nery is of Mexican nationality; he was born in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, on December 12, 1994.

Why was Luis Nery banned in Japan?

Nery defeated Shinsuke Yamanaka in four rounds for the WBC and The Ring Bantam belts in 2017, but a pre-fight test revealed Nery had tested positive for zilpaterol, a prohibited drug. The Ring quickly stripped himself of the title, while the WBC sided with him, after Nery's justification, claiming that he ate beef and that its source used the drup to make beef bigger.

Regardless, he was set for a rematch seven months later and defeated Yamanaka in two rounds, although he was three pounds underweight. After that, the Japanese Commission imposed a lifetime ban on him for fighting in Japan.
