He is the former champion of the featherweight weight class of the UFC. Holloway stepped inside a professional mixed martial arts cage for the first time on September 11, 2010, in a lightweight showdown against Duke Saragosa at X-1 World Events 36: Heroes. Holloway won the fight by unanimous decision and kicked off his professional career with a victory.

Max Holloway stormed his way into the UFC on February 4, 2012, at UFC 143 against Dustin Poirier in a featherweight fight. Poirier clutched Holloway in a triangle choke in the first round, leading to his submission and first loss in his professional mixed martial arts career. He bounced back from the initial setback and amassed a winning streak, winning the undisputed featherweight title at UFC 212 by defeating Jose Aldo.
