4) Nick Diaz vs. Carlos Condit UFC 143
In the main event of UFC 143, Carlos Condit stuck to a very intelligent gameplan and became up the UFC interim welterweight Champion by defeating Nick Diaz by unanimous decision. The scores were 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47. The bout was closer than the scores made it appear, with Diaz having a case for winning three of the five rounds (1, 2 and 5).
For the first time in Condits fighting career fans have been bitterly divided over the opinion of Condit's gameplan, which involved him landing strikes and circling away from being cornered by an oncoming Diaz. Many belived he ran away from the fight. Diaz was, unsurprisingly, the aggressor throughout the entire fight. He walked down Condit and attempted to corner him up against the cage, or at the very least, get him to exchange in the center of the Octagon. He soon began to talk trash, throw up his hands and bait Condit into fighting his fight. But Condit never bit and stick to his gameplan. Despite different from Condits nature it's impossible to deny that the gameplan was effective.
The first two rounds were close, with Diaz coming forward and landing strikes while Condit threw leg kicks and avoided damage. Condit seemed to pull ahead in the third and particularly the fourth, as he appeared to find his groove, loosening up and starting to score points with the judges. He found a home for his leg kicks, as well as another for his shin on Diaz's grill more than a few times. Mixed in some nice, creative strikes in short bursts as well while a visibly frustrated Diaz started throwing less strikes. Condit was controlling the fifth as well until late in the round when Diaz managed to get his back, lock up a body triangle, and attempted to submit Condit. "The Natural Born Killer" held Diaz off until the final bell rang, and claimed the decision.
5) Carlos Condit vs. Martin Kampmann 2 UFCFN 27
Carlos Condit had unfinished business with Martin Kampmann when the two met up in the main event of UFC Fight Night 27 Aug. 28, 2013 from Indianapolis, Indiana. As Kampmann defeated Carlos in his UFC debut. That was a three round war with many believed Condit could have won if the fight was of five rounds, and that’s what Condit got in this rematch. As expected, the bout delivered a rousing war that was punctuated by a statement win from Condit.
The only knock on Condit in his last two losses against Georges St. Pierre and Johny Hendricks was his takedown defense, so Kampmann immediately began looking for the takedown. Kampmann got the takedown, and looked to advance position by taking Condit's back. Condit maneuvered free only to be taken down once again. He got up to land a few punches, but Kampmann ultimately won the first frame with effective wrestling.
It was beginning to look like their previous match at UFC Fight Night 18 in April 2009, where Kampmann spoiled Condit UFC debut by utilizing his wrestling to take a close split decision. After a stiff left hand from Kampmann, Condit responded with a crisp boxing sequence. Kampmann once again sought the takedown, but this time Condit was ready, countering with precise punches and kicks.
Fully finding his timing in the third round, Condit began to unleash his extensive arsenal of strikes in rapid succession. Finding his mark with knees, kicks, and punches, Condit opened up a cut on Kampmann's face. When Kampmann obtained another takedown, Condit reversed and took Kampmann's back to look for a rear naked choke. Kampmann barley survived the round and was saved by the bell.
The tide had turned completely in favor of Condit in the fourth, and although Kampmann attempted to mount some offense early, he simply couldn't stop Condit’s momentum . "Natural Born Killer" rushed forward with a brutal series of knees, following up with strikes to earn the stoppage and avenge his prior loss.
