Despite training with three separate teams, Jake Shields claims that he, Jon Jones, and Gordon Ryan are a trio of "friends." The former UFC welterweight title was featured in a picture with the two athletes on social media.

While Ryan and Jones have been training together in the past, Shields has not been known to train with either. However, the three took a picture together at what seemed to be a party that Shields shared.

Shields captioned the post by saying:

"My friends can beat up your friends. Jon Jones and Gordon Ryan."

Fans were surprised to see the three together even though they have all been cordial with each other in the past. Former Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitor Dillon Danis, a former rival of Ryan's, was one of the first to react to the photo, calling the three a group of "losers."

Danis tweeted:

"3 losers"

Other fans chose to poke holes in Shields' claim that Ryan and Jones could beat up anybody else's pair of friends by bringing up fighters they felt were superior.

Another fan tweeted:

"Don't mention Aspinall"

Other fans commented:

"Ngannou smokes them both"
"I seriously doubt it"
"Depends which 'friend'"

Jon Jones' history with Gordon Ryan

As Jon Jones has approached the latter stage of his career, the UFC heavyweight champion has put a larger emphasis on his grappling game. As a part of his training, 'Bones' has done work with multi-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion Gordon Ryan.

Most notably, Jones spent time working with Ryan ahead of UFC 295 before he withdrew from the bout with a pectoral injury.

As a result of their joint gym sessions, Jones has been seen at Ryan's grappling competitions, supporting his training partner. It is unclear if Jones plans to resume training with Ryan for his rumored upcoming fight with Stipe Miocic.
