MMA all-time great Demetrious Johnson knows all too well that martial artists perform the best when they are at their peak physical condition.

There are certainly a lot of nuances in play for professional fighters once their match date comes. In MMA, athletes must first endure the battle of making weight before their actual fight.

With the dangers of severe weight cutting and dehydration plaguing the sport over the years, ONE Championship introduced its trailblazing weight and hydration protocols.

Apart from passing the contractual weight, fighters must also submit a urine sample, which will be tested to check hydration levels in the body.

Demetrious Johnson fully embraced this innovative method after joining the world's largest martial arts organization.

Since fighters are competing close to their natural weight and well-hydrated, 'Mighty Mouse' said it promotes safety and even affects their performance for the better.

The retired former flyweight MMA world champion said in an episode of the Mighty Cast, with ONE VP Rich Franklin as his guest:

"You’re fully hydrated, you’re fed, you’re fueled properly so you can [produce a good] output. And I believe that’s part of the reason why the fights that we have are high-paced, good finish rates, because athletes can perform at their highest levels, not coming off a dehydrated state of being."

"I still can fight if I wanted to, but I’d like to be on this side of the fence where I’m still involved in the sport by breaking down fights, getting excited as a fan of the next up and comer and just enjoy these guys. I’m 38 years old. My brain’s still healthy."
