Australian UFC icon Alexander Volkanovski has sided with Novak Djokovic after the tennis legend declined a customary post-match interview at the Australian Open 2025, following controversial comments made by Channel 9 journalist Tony Jones.
During a live broadcast, Jones mocked Djokovic and his Serbian fans with disparaging remarks, saying:
"Back to Melbourne Park, where you can see the Novak Djokovic fans there in full voice. The chants are quite extraordinary. Novak, he's overrated! Novak's a has-been! Novak, kick him out! Boy I'm glad they can't hear me."

The incident, which occurred amid Djokovic’s fans cheering at Melbourne Park, sparked outrage on social media and among sports figures, including Paul McNamee and Nick Kyrgios.
Djokovic, who advanced to the Australian Open quarterfinals after defeating Jiri Lehecka in straight sets, refused to participate in the customary post-match interview with Channel 9. Addressing the situation, Djokovic stated:
"Couple days ago, a famous sports journalist, who works for official broadcaster Channel 9 in Australia, made a mockery of Serbian fans and also made insulting and offensive comments towards me and since then he chose not to issue any public apology."
He added:
"I have nothing against Jim Courier neither the Australian public. It was a very awkward situation for me to face on the court today and it's unfortunate. I chose to say something to the crowd but obviously it wasn't the time and space or the situation for me to explain what I am doing right now."
Volkanovski took to social media to express his support for Djokovic, writing:
"He’s right and he should get an apology!"

Alexander Volkanovski gets called out by Patricio 'Pitbull' Freire
Former Bellator champion Patricio 'Pitbull' Freire has set his sights on Alexander Volkanovski after becoming a free agent following his release from the PFL. Freire criticized the PFL for failing to honor their contract, leading to his decision to seek new opportunities.
Taking to X, the Brazilian fighter named Volkanovski as a priority opponent, alongside Ilia Topuria and Diego Lopes. In an interview with Ariel Helwani, Freire said:
"Let's do that fight [with Volkanovski]. He is the number one contender. I want the belt and he is the guy... Topuria is my top choice. Champion versus champion... Diego Lopes [would be my third choice], he's a good one."
