Belal Muhammad fired off some shots at Kamaru Usman online with Jorge Masvidal as well as Colby Covington catching some strays to use the parlance of our time. The former kingpin of 170 pounds seemed to kick things off, via his X account @USMAN84kg, when Usman said:

"Alright enough of the nice guy... you were never chasing me Bum. You were barely in rankings when I dominated the division. FYI I have a win over Leon [Edwards] son."

The current UFC welterweight champion would hit back at this statement by way of a retweet when Muhammad responded:

"Dominated the division? u beat masvidal twice and went to cardio kickboxing war with colby twice (colby sucks). u were protected by ufc.. now u can barely walk...your podcast sucks ..and ur part in black panther sucked."

Belal Muhammad's time as champ and how the welterweight strap got from Kamaru Usman to him

Belal Muhammad currently sits atop the UFC's welterweight division but Kamaru Usman previously occupied that spot not all that long ago. Usman had defended against Masvidal as well as Covington two times apiece, as referenced by Muhammad, and also defended his title against Gilbert Burns between those rematches.

'The Nigerian Nightmare' would lose his belt to Leon Edwards by way of a fifth-round knockout at UFC 278. This was a rematch with Edwards tying up their series at one win apiece. The two men would go on to have a rubber match with Kamaru Usman losing to 'Rocky' Edwards on points at UFC 286.

Edwards would then defend his strap against the aforementioned Colby Covington via unanimous decision at UFC 296 in December of last year. Leon Edwards' time at the top came to an end just a couple of weeks ago on July 27.

'Remember the Name' would make sure fans would always remember him in the UFC's welterweight title lineage when Muhammad bested Edwards by unanimous decision at UFC 304. This brings us to the present day where Belal Muhammad is the reigning UFC welterweight champion.

While Usman is on the heels of a three-fight losing streak, including a points loss to Khamzat Chimaev following the pair of Edwards setbacks, he is still situated as the division's number two ranked welterweight contender. Usman would still represent a merit-minded challenge for Muhammad's first title defense in the eyes of many despite his recent skid.
