Islam Makhachev recently tried to convince Daniel Cormier to return to camp because of the torrid paces Khabib Nurmagomedov puts them through as a coach. A social media post of this interview exchange between the reigning UFC lightweight champion and Cormier to the ESPN MMA Instagram account also elicited a reaction from the UFC welterweight champion, Belal Muhammad.

The 170-pound titleholder has also trained under Nurmagomedov and it was clear he found the humor in the situation. Meanwhile, during the interview, Makhachev said:

"Maybe you can come join for us. Just control him a little bit because he don't listen Javier [Mendez]. I always tell Javier, Javier you are the head coach. Stop him."

Cormier responded to the 155 pounds UFC champion by quipping:

"He's [Khabib's] just a psycopath. Nobody can control him."

In the comment section of the Instagram post by ESPN MMA, Muhammad offered his response to this exchange and kept it succinct by posting a pair of crying laughing emojis.

Islam Makhachev and the potential path to three belts

Islam Makhachev has mentioned in several instances his desire to become a two-division champion in the UFC with a focus on the welterweight belt. According to those close to him though, the 33-year-old could potentially become a three-division champion in the sport if he chooses to pursue that path to 185 pounds.

Makhachev's coach Javier Mendez spoke about this in a relatively recent interview with The Schmo. The prolific head coach spoke of his comprehensive belief that the lightweight titleholder could unseat Dricus du Plessis from his middleweight throne if that fight was ever made.

Mendez spoke of Islam Makhachev's abilities which he sees consistently in the gym. He does not see competing at 185 pounds as being out of the Russian's depths considering the demonstrable ability he has.

This was being discussed in the context of Makhachev possibly leapfrogging over Belal Muhammad to fight DDP because while Makhachev has vocalized interest in welterweight gold, Mendez mentioned how he does not see a Makhachev vs. Muhammad fight transpiring considering their closeness as training partners.

Before any of that can happen, Makhachev does have his next lightweight title assignment and a win could put him in the history books. Never before has a lightweight champion in the UFC made four successful consecutive title defenses and he can potentially do just that when he rematches Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 311 on Jan. 18.
