A Bellator legend recently discussed the current state of the promotion after publicly requesting his release to join Dana White's UFC. In the past few months, several fighters have voiced their complaints about being sidelined with no fights and noting that they believe their prime years are being wasted
Patricio 'Pitbull' Freire has been among the most vocal as he publicly requested his release and expressed interest in joining the UFC in the final years of his career. The Brazilian is the reigning featherweight champion and has been among their most accomplished fighters.
The 37-year-old has blasted the PFL, who now own and operate the promotion as one-off events, for canceling scheduled events and keeping him sidelined for fights that never materialized. During his latest appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, 'Pitbull' mentioned that the promotion he has been synonymous with isn't the same under the new regime and believes it's time to move on and part ways:
"The Bellator that I helped build is no more... The history that I made in Bellator was beautiful but it's a cycle that has come to an end. It's not the same place anymore, things aren't working like they used to. And I think we just have to move our separate ways, no strings attached."

Bellator legend Patricio 'Pitbull' Freire reaffirms interest in competing against top UFC featherweights
In addition to requesting his release from the PFL, Bellator legend Patricio 'Pitbull' Freire reaffirmed his interest in joining the UFC and competing against the top featherweights.
During the aforementioned appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, Freire mentioned that he wants to cement his legacy and believes competing in the UFC would do just that. He also believes Dana White would be interested in signing him:
"Now, for me, it's about legacy. I want to fight in the UFC. That's all... When Dana White doesn't want someone, he just says no, but when he was asked about me at the recent press conference, he gave a so-so kind of answer. So I'm sure that when I'm free, he will be able to speak more openly."
