Devin Haney's lawsuit against Ryan Garcia explored
The bout between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia back in April 2024 was marred with controversy from the lead-up to the aftermath. In the lead-up, Garcia was witnessed by fans to be acting rather bizarre and erratic online. At the weigh-ins, he was significantly overweight.
The fight, as exciting as it was, saw an overweight Garcia batter Haney to a majority decision win. He then tested positive for the banned substance ostarine, prompting NYSAC to overturn the decision to a No-Contest. Garcia was then suspended from competition for a year. This is when Haney filed the lawsuit.
Haney's attorney Pat English cited his opponent's PED usage as the reason for the American boxer to file the lawsuit. Part of the 16-page lawsuit said:
“At no time did Devin Haney consent to engage in a bout against a boxer who was positive for a performance-enhancing drug, performance enhancing-procedure or masking agent and would not have proceeded with the bout had he known. The New York State Athletic Commission would not have permitted the bout had it known of the positive finding or of Garcia’s IV use."
Haney also sued Garcia's promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, for "unjust enrichment" as they allegedly breached their contract by depriving Haney of the funds demanded by the NYSAC in light of Garcia's PED violation.
All this is in the past now, as Haney has seemingly accepted Garcia's demand of dropping the lawsuit for him to accept a rematch. In return, Haney demanded Garcia agree to use VADA (Voluntary Anti-Doping Association) to conduct the drug testing.
