Conor McGregor recently reflected on his 40-second knockout of Donald Cerrone and many combat sports aficionados online reacted in droves. 'Cowboy' hung up the gloves after going winless following this McGregor setback in fights against Anthony Pettis, Niko Price, Alex Morono, and Jim Miller.

McGregor headlined UFC 246 opposite Cerrone in January 2020 and was publically recalling that performance from four and a half years ago. Taking to his personal X account @TheNotoriousMMA, McGregor stated:

"That's a flying knee directly to the temple of the cowboy, that horse is f*ckin' mine Cowboy @ufc legends"

Conor McGregor's journey following the Donald Cerrone fight

Conor McGregor was looking to rebound from back-to-back losses to Floyd Mayweather in boxing and Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 before this Donald Cerrone fight. The former double-division champion had also not been inside the cage for over a year following the Khabib setback.

McGregor blitzed Cerrone in less than a minute with 'Cowboy' mounting minimal offensive response en route to the Irish superstar winning.

As of this writing though, this is the last recorded win for the 35-year-old combat sports superstar. 'The Notorious' had a rematch and subsequent trilogy bout against Dustin Poirier who he had previously finished with strikes in the first round of their first fight in September 2014 at UFC 178.

The Dublin native was finished by punches in the second stanza during their second clash at UFC 257 saw Poirier tie up the series in January 2021.

The rubber match saw McGregor sustain a massive injury that has kept him on the sidelines ever since the summer trilogy fight transpired that same year. In July 2021 at UFC 264, McGregor snapped his leg in the first round of his pay-per-view headliner against Poirier with the Irishman dealing with the residuals of that traumatic instance since then.

There were plans for McGregor to return on June 29 of this year but a toe injury scrapped those plans. The targeted fight versus Michael Chandler at UFC 303 in the initial welterweight main event fell by the wayside and there is no clear picture at this juncture as to when Conor McGregor may or may not return to the octagon.
