17-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion, Marcus 'Buchecha' Almeida is a genius when it comes to fighting from his back. The Brazilian icon has put away some of the best grapplers in the world in both Gi and No-Gi jiu-jitsu and largely did it with his back on the mats.
What makes Almeida even more amazing is the fact that his top pressure-passing game is just as formidable as his attacks off his back.
Buchecha's technique is the highest mastery of the fundamentals. Most of his sequences involve just three parts, a set-up, a transition, then a finish. In a recent post on his Instagram account, the grappling icon showcased a nifty half-guard bottom sweep en route to an impactful toss-over slam:
"Flipped 'em 😮 Could you pull off this move? 🤔 @marcusbuchecha"

For the uninitiated, the half-guard bottom is a position where you're on your back with one of your opponent's legs trapped between your legs. It's one of the most successful positions to sweep your opponent and reverse the position.
The key to this powerful sweep and slam is Almeida's grip on his opponent's left sleeve and how he has it trapped in-between his legs. From the sit-up to the slam, he never let go of the sleeve grip and it provided him leverage to control his opponent's body.

After achieving everything there is to achieve in competitive jiujitsu, the BJJ icon transitioned into MMA and has destroyed every single opponent put in front of him. In just his first year in ONE Championship, 'Buchecha' either KO'd or submitted all of his four opponents, including former ONE interim heavyweight world title contender Kirill Grishenko.
With four straight stoppage victories inside the Circle over the course of 12 months, 'Buchecha' has skyrocketed himself to the upper echelon of the heavyweight division. Perhaps just one more win will grant him his first-ever world title shot in MMA. A fight with 'Reug Reug' Oumar Kane, a clash that has been canceled in the past, sounds like the next step for the BJJ legend to realize his full potential in the sport.
