Cody Garbrandt silences fan criticism over vertigo statement, gives due props to Deiveson Figueiredo

The Deiveson Figueiredo vs. Cody Garbrandt bantamweight bout served as the first fight of the landmark UFC 300 event on April 13. In it, former UFC flyweight champion Figueiredo beat former UFC bantamweight champion Garbrandt via second-round submission.

Garbrandt later tweeted an image of a note, suggesting that he felt great in the matchup until he was afflicted by vertigo, a health problem characterized by dizziness. He recalled being unable to control the spinning once he was on the mat.

Regardless, Garbrandt notably congratulated Figueiredo and his camp. 'No Love' further highlighted that he was hospitalized after the fight, continued experiencing vertigo, and was throwing up until 4 a.m.

The 32-year-old former UFC bantamweight kingpin expressed his gratitude toward his supporters, opined that it wasn't his night, and vowed to return before 2024 draws to a close.

He seems to have dealt with the health issue since 2012 and emphasized that he'll correct it soon. An excerpt from his note read:

"I'll get this corrected I've dealt with vertigo since 2012."

A number of fans chimed in with their support for Cody Garbrandt, sending their good wishes for his health and well-being. On the contrary, some criticized him, as they believe he's downplaying his opponent's performance by attributing the loss to the health issue.

In response to an X user advising him to take down the tweet, Garbrandt fired back by writing:

"Not a good look to say what happened to me in a fight by what I was experiencing? It's the truth takin nothing from Davison, you think I would just lay on my back not getting up whole time I was spinning not trying to get my face elbowed in and fighting through it."

Another fan opined that both 'No Love' experiencing vertigo and Deiveson Figueiredo doing well in the grappling realm could concurrently be true. Garbrandt appeared to agree and tweeted:

"Of course figgy is a great fighter honored to fight with him."

Cody Garbrandt made his pro MMA debut the same year he self-admittedly started experiencing vertigo

The Ohio-born Cody Garbrandt competed as an amateur wrestler and eventually transitioned to amateur MMA in 2009. Intriguingly, 'No Love' made his professional MMA debut in Dec. 2012, the same year his battle against vertigo began, as indicated by his aforementioned tweet.

Garbrandt later made his UFC debut in Jan. 2015 and subsequently beat MMA great Dominick Cruz to win the UFC bantamweight championship in Dec. 2016.

Considering the variables at play, it would appear that Cody Garbrandt has proven his mettle by competing at the highest levels of MMA despite vertigo issues.

Garbrandt (14-6 MMA, 9-6 UFC) is 2-1 in his past three fights and has consistently maintained that he'll surely reclaim UFC gold someday. Presently, it's unclear as to who he'll fight next.
