Colby Covington, who was once the UFC interim welterweight titleholder, finds himself at a crossroads following a series of setbacks. The 36-year-old has struggled to maintain his championship momentum, going 2-3 since 2020. Most recently, he suffered a TKO loss (doctor stoppage) to Joaquin Buckley at UFC Tampa, prompting discussions about his future in the sport.
'Chaos', on the other hand, has set his sights on reclaiming a top position and challenged reigning champion Belala Muhammad in a video on his Twitch channel. While acknowledging the age factor, Covington remains confident, citing examples of fighters like Daniel Cormier who succeeded in their forties.
Covington sees the matchup as favorable, dismissing the threat of being taken down and expressing confidence in his ability to secure victory. He said:
“I'm going to do the unthinkable. I'm going to shock the world. DC [Daniel Cormier] was a champion at 41. I’m only 36 years young… Belal Muhammad, whatever the race is, I can easily beat [him]. That’s a good matchup, he’s not gonna take me down. He's not going to outwrestle me. F*ck that! I will smack that dude silly. I don't know if anyone knows who he is but they're going to know once he's in my highlight reel after I'm done with him."

Michael Bisping offers his take on Colby Covington's plans to move to middleweight division
Colby Covington has hinted at a move to the middleweight division after losing to Joaquin Buckley, identifying a clash with Sean Strickland as his preferred matchup. He believes middleweights lack the athleticism and speed of welterweights, a factor he could exploit. Covington also dismissed Strickland’s skill set as predictable and limited.
However, former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping dismissed the idea, suggesting Covington lacks the size and could struggle against elite contenders. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Bisping said:
“Colby’s too small, simple as that. I don’t think he’s going to be fighting Sean Strickland anytime soon. I mean, for example, if Strickland goes out there and beats Dricus du Plessis, there’s no way in hell that Colby moves up to 185 and gets an immediate title fight."
Bisping added:
“We know he’s used to getting a lot of title fights. He fought Kamaru Usman, right? He lost in Round 5. Then he beats Tyron Woodley, then he fights Kamaru Usman again. He beats Jorge Masvidal, and then he gets a title shot again, right? You’ve had three title fights at 170. You ain’t going to walk into a title fight in your inaugural fight at 185 pounds.”
