Judge Derek Cleary scored all rounds in favor of Covington with a 10-9 score, except for the last round in which he scored 10-8 in favor of 'Chaos'. Judge Sal D'Amato gave Covington all five rounds with a 10-9 score.
Jorge Masvidal only scored a 10-9 in round two, on Junichiro Kamijo's scorecard.
Tensions had been simmering between Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington for a while leading up to their bout at UFC 272. The NCAA Division 1 wrestler said some nasty things about his former teammate, even going as far as talking about Masvidal's wife and children.
Despite their bout being officially settled in the octagon with Colby Covington being the winner, Jorge Masvidal wasn't satisfied with the result. The ugliness of their feud resulted in 'Gamebred' attacking Covington outside a Miami beach steakhouse a few weeks after UFC 272.
Masvidal allegedly punched Covington twice, which left him with a broken tooth and an abrasion on his wrist.
Jorge Masvidal was arrested and charged with aggravated battery and one count of criminal mischief. He was later released on a $15,000 bond. With multiple hearings being delayed, a tentative date for the trial has been set, for February 27, 2023, according to an article by MMA Junkie.
Will Jorge Masvidal fight Leon Edwards?
A trilogy bout between former welterweight champ Kamaru Usman and current champ Leon Edwards has been targeted by the UFC, for March 2023. However, the No. 6-ranked UFC welterweight Stephen Thompson speculated that Usman's injury could jeopardize the fight.
'Wonderboy' further speculated that Masvidal could be the possible replacement for Kamaru Usman. This, according to him, is because 'Gamebred' and 'Rocky' have a beef stemming from the 'three piece and a soda' incident backstage at UFC Fight Night 147.
However, Stephen Thompson clarified that his statements were mere speculation and that he isn't privy to the premier MMA organization's plans for the welterweight championship bout next year.
Though a potential bout between Masvidal and Edwards could pull in massive pay-per-view numbers, it doesn't make sense for a No. 11-ranked fighter to skip names like Gilbert Burns, Belal Muhammad, Khamzat Chimaev, and Colby Covington. All of them are ranked in the top 5 of the welterweight division.
