Conor McGregor has lambasted Irish politician, Helen McEntee, amid rumors of her potentially being in line for a prominent position in the Irish government. Akin to many other critics of McEntee, McGregor notably highlighted her husband's purported connections to the pharmaceutical industry.

Back in 2023, Gript Media's John McGuirk, who has previously partaken in Irish politics and is a writer, was one of many netizens who discussed Helen McEntee and her husband Paul Hickey, and spoke on their alleged connection with purported 'Big Pharma' agendas. Hickey was reportedly the Director of Market Access & Stakeholder Relations for the U.S.-headquartered pharmaceutical giant, AbbVie.

Former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor, who's eyeing a return to combat sports competition in 2025, put forth multiple tweets seemingly mirroring some details from McGuirk's aforementioned report. McGregor cautioned Ireland against letting McEntee be selected as the Minister for Health.

The 36-year-old McGregor indicated that the 38-year-old McEntee's husband's high-level pharmaceutical industry connections could compromise the integrity of her decisions with regards to public health policies, drug regulations and government contracts.

Calling for transparency and accountability, McGregor demanded that the Irish leadership that prioritizes health over profits:

"Helen McEntee should not be appointed Minister of Health. The role of the Minister of Health is to prioritize public health and ensure decisions are made in the best interest of the people—from outside influences. However, there's a clear conflict of interest in appointing Helen McEntee to this critical position."

Moreover, McGregor opined McEntee shouldn't be the Minister for Education either:

"Nor should be Minister for Education! Protect the children!"

Akin to McGuirk's report, Conor McGregor explained that AbbVie is one of the world's largest manufacturers of "puberty blocker" drugs used to slow or in some cases, stop se*ual development in children who are transitioning to another gender.

McGregor also indicated that AbbVie was under investigation in Texas for its manufacturing and promotion of drugs like Lupron, which some deem extremely damaging to vulnerable children:

"The Minister's husband, Paul Hickey, is a senior executive at the Pharmaceutical firm, AbbVie, where he serves as director of market access ... AbbVie's drug Lupron, which was originally designed to treat prostate cancer but which is also used as a puberty blocker, had €892 million dollars worth of sales in 2019, though it is hard to say exactly how much of this revenue was derived from its use in suppressing puberty in transgender children."

The tensions between Conor McGregor and Helen McEntee

Per the BBC, Fine Gael deputy leader Helen McEntee hailed Nikita Hand's civil lawsuit win against Conor McGregor in November 2024. McEntee lauded Hand for her "bravery" and "determination." McGregor's supporters criticized McEntee for her remarks.

They emphasized that Hand's criminal case against him couldn't proceed due to insufficient evidence. Meanwhile, McGregor vowed to appeal the civil court's verdict.

McEntee long faced criticism for supporting Ireland's proposed hate speech laws. Akin to aspiring politician Conor McGregor, other critics feel McEntee's political progress could benefit her husband Paul Hickey and AbbVie.

In 2023, a netizen underscored that Hickey and AbbVie could utilize the hate speech laws, as people would fear commenting on sensitive topics such as gender transitioning, transitioning-related drugs, etc., owing to potential legal action. Per The Irish Times, the controversial hate speech legislation was blocked in late 2024, which McEntee confirmed.
