Conor McGregor wingspan: How the Irishman's massive reach compared to his height puts him at an incredible advantage

Conor McGregor is an exceptionally talented athlete. He overwhelmed his opponents with his ferocity and explosive striking, although his preferred weapon was in reality his left hand.

In mixed martial arts, the physical attribute of an athlete has a direct effect on their performance and has proven to be an advantage for the fighter. Fighters with the reach advantage have a significant overall edge over their opponents. UFC reach (or wingspan) is measured from the tip of the middle finger on one hand to the tip of the middle finger on the other hand with the arms extended horizontally at shoulder height.

At a height of 5'9" and a wingspan of 74 inches (1.88 m), Conor McGregor possesses an enormous reach advantage. This came in handy for the Irishman, who has predominantly competed in the featherweight and lightweight divisions during his career against opponents with shorter reach.

For perspective, Jose Aldo, who lost his 145-pound title to McGregor at UFC 194, has a reach of 70 inches. McGregor became the first simultaneous two-division champion in the UFC with a victory over Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205. Alvarez has a reach of 69 inches.

McGregor's reach of 74 inches is identical to that of welterweight champion Leon Edwards. Former 170-pound champion Tyron Woodley and UFC superstar Jorge Masvidal, who compete in a heavier weight class, possess the same reach as McGregor. Paulo Costa, who competes in the middleweight division, interestingly has a reach of 72 in (183 cm).

Conor McGregor is expected to return to action against Michael Chandler after the completion of the forthcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), on which they will serve as opposing coaches. McGregor will have a substantial reach advantage over Chandler, whose reach is 3 inches less than McGregor's. Chandler's reach is 71 inches (180 cm).

Mike Tyson and WWE star The Undertaker heap praise on Conor McGregor

In terms of fame, wealth, and star power, Conor McGregor is head and shoulders above his fellow UFC competitors. The UFC's marquee attraction and the man responsible for expanding the company into new markets is the reason so many new fans started watching the sport.

Like the greatest pro wrestlers of all time, he has the ability to build enthusiasm for an event by talking trash before a match. The Irishman's bold statements and foresight were bolstered by his equally impressive performances, creating a thrilling viewing experience.

On a recent episode of the Hotboxin' podcast, boxing legend Mike Tyson lauded McGregor's ability to sell fights, stating:

“The only guys that got all the money, they [have] got a gimmick…Conor McGregor, he has a gimmick. He’s crazy, he’s bold, it’s a gimmick. In real life he’s a beautiful guy….You have to have a gimmick.”

The Undertaker responded:

“It sells tickets, puts a**es in seats. That's what we did. That’s a great assessment right there, you have to have a gimmick.”
