News surrounding Khamzat Chimaev has been scarce in recent times as he remains on the sidelines waiting for his next assignment, but Dana White has made a huge announcement regarding the prospect's future.

Last time out, 'Borz' showcased his dominance in a one-sided win over Kevin Holland at UFC 279. Now, six months later, the promising star remains without a fight despite absorbing no real damage in his most recent octagon appearance, though he has been calling for numerous matchups during his hiatus.

In a recent interview, Dana White revealed that Khamzat Chimaev would be moving up to middleweight and could begin looking towards the upper echelon of fighters in that weight class:

"Yeah, he'll [Khamzat Chimaev] fight at middleweight. And yes, he's in a position where he should be fighting top 3 guys in the world."

Chimaev has been vocal about his thoughts on the top contenders at welterweight and the confident Swede believes he deserves – and will win – UFC gold around his waist.

If the 28-year-old sees his immediate future in the 170lbs division, he will have his eyes firmly set on the title clash between champion Leon Edwards and challenger Kamaru Usman when the two collide for the third time on March 18.

A move up in weight would likely force Chimaev to fight at least once before being offered a shot at the champion of the division. The most probable matchup for the European at 185lbs would be Robert Whittaker in an undeniable No.1 contender's bout against a man in top form.

Khamzat Chimaev title fight: How close is the superstar to a shot at UFC gold?

If he had made weight and gone ahead with his clash with Nate Diaz last time out, Khamzat Chimaev would likely be fighting for the welterweight championship in his next fight, but that isn't the case.

After almost jeopardizing an entire card with his weight miss, the freestyle wrestler was punished for his actions and now seems almost certain to be moved to middleweight.

Whether he stays in his current division or not, Chimaev could potentially find himself in a title fight if he manages to dispose of whoever stands across the octagon from him next time out.
