Conor McGregor has not competed in mixed martial arts for over three years after breaking his leg at UFC 264 in July 2021. 'The Notorious' appeared set to return to the octagon in June as he booked to face Michael Chandler at UFC 303, however, he was ultimately forced to withdraw due to a pinky toe injury.

Dana White recently shared an update on the highly-anticipated return of the former double champ. Speaking to Robert Griffin III of the Outta Pocket podcast, the UFC CEO said:

"He's fighting with everybody right now, but he's not fighting anybody right now. I've said this a lot and, you know, Conor has gotten into a position where he's made so much money and he has all these businesses that continue to make him a lot of money - it's tough to get up and fight when you're in the position that he's in, but I do believe that Conor Mcgregor will fight in 2025."

White continued:

"There is no fight made or a date set or any of that, but I believe. If you watch what I was saying in 2024, I was saying, 'I don't think he's going to fight in 2024'. And I do believe he will fight in 2025."

McGregor has been the biggest star in the history of the promotion, by a significant margin. He has headlined the six highest-selling pay-per-view events in UFC history, according to Tapology. While he originally planned to face Michael Chandler, it is now unclear who will be opposite the former double champ in his return.

Chael Sonnen shares high praise for Conor McGregor

Conor McGregor's prolonged inactivity has led to speculations that he will never enter the octagon again. Chael Sonnen recently looked back at the career of 'The Notorious', labeling him as possibly the best fighter the sport has ever seen.

In a video shared to his Instagram, 'The American Gangster' said:

"Conor McGregor, what will his legacy be? Have we forgotten how great he was? 145 and 155 are the most difficult weight classes in the sport. Conor was the champion of both divisions simultaneously. That is insane... Conor McGregor was truly, perhaps, the best fighter that's ever done this."

Sonnen further commended 'The Notorious' for the difficult path to becoming the first double champ in UFC history. While he has been largely inactive in the time since - taking just four fights and winning once - it is impossible to ignore his impact on MMA.
