American grappling star Danielle Kelly stresses to her students the importance of knowing when and when not to tap out so they can better preserve their bodies.
If the recent Mikey Musumeci and Gantumur Bayanduuren match taught us anything, it's that jiu-jitsu can be devastating if one chooses not to tap.
The Mongolian grappler refused to submit at ONE Fight Night 6 on Prime Video, leading to several torn ligaments in his knee and a broken ankle. Danielle Kelly spoke to The MMA Superfan about knowing when to tap, stating:
"I think you have to know your own body. Maybe some things kind of pop and it’s pretty minor if you know you can walk after, like a week it’s gonna be sore, but you can walk after that week and train. But I guess like once he had that reverse grip from the inside heel hook, that looked pretty painful. It looked like he didn’t know how to defend a leg lock."

The 27-year-old added:
"I tell my students all the time like, everyone’s going to try to do leglocks, you need to put yourself in bad positions and be very comfortable to tap or be comfortable getting yourself trying to defend your heel, defend your ankle, get into positions to escape your knee line. I stress that now. You just don’t want to be in that position where your leg is literally getting broken off. I mean, good luck to him, hopefully he’s ok."
Unfortunately, Gantumur Bayanduuren is not in good health following the loss to Musumeci. It's been revealed that he suffered a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus, in addition to breaking his ankle.

Danielle Kelly doesn't mind facing bigger opponents
The Silver Fox BJJ affiliate picked up her first submission victory inside the circle at ONE Fight Night 4 on Prime Video, sinking in a rear-naked choke on Mariia Molchanova.
With her eyes on a world title, Kelly doesn't mind competing against bigger opponents. She told ONE:
“As far as opponents, I mean, I definitely have a few lined up... I’ve also called out a few people so, you know, I’m really happy to whoever they give me. I think in the past because I won against bigger girls, I just prefer my weight class.”
The rising star is scheduled to face Ayaka Miura at ONE Fight Night 7 on Prime Video on February 24, live from the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Thailand.
