Was Darren Till fast-tracked to a welterweight title shot?
There was once a time when Tyron Woodley was the reigning welterweight champion who was seemingly untouchable. Darren Till was making strides of his own in the division. After his UFC debut win, Till fought to a draw in his next bout before amassing four wins and earning a title shot.
Prior to facing Woodley, 'The Gorilla' fought against the likes of Donald Cerrone and Stephen Thompson. He secured a knockout win over 'Cowboy' and fought 'Wonderboy' for five rounds to a decision victory. Till was also infamous for his brash and outspoken attitude where he displayed supreme confidence and a McGregor-like disregard for his opponents' skills.
Up until the fight with Woodley, Till was undefeated in MMA and many were touting the Liverpudlian as the next champion.
Woodley put a stop to Darren Till's hype train at UFC 228, by dropping the Scouser and submitting him with a brabo choke in the second round. After his first loss, it seemed like Till's run to the title might have been a bit shortsighted by the UFC.
In his very next fight at UFC Fight Night 147 against Jorge Masvidal, Till was knocked out clean in the second round.
Till moved up to middleweight and beat Kelvin Gastelum via a split decision at UFC 244. However, he lost his next two bouts against Robert Whittaker and Derek Brunson, getting submitted by the latter via a rear-naked choke at UFC Fight Night 191.
'The Gorilla' is set to face Dricus du Plessis on the main card of UFC 282 on December 10th.
