Demetrious Johnson believes Renato Moicano poses a unique challenge to Islam Makhachev at UFC 311 and explained why the Brazilian’s short-notice addition to the main event makes for a more dangerous fight. Originally set to face Beneil Dariush, Moicano stepped up when Arman Tsarukyan withdrew due to injury.
Johnson highlighted Moicano’s versatility, aggressive striking, and unpredictability as key factors. Unlike Tsarukyan’s wrestling-heavy style, Moicano’s all-around game and fearless approach could disrupt Makhachev’s strategy. Johnson also noted the Brazilian’s preparation, citing his experience in five-round bouts and past fights against southpaws.
While Makhachev remains a heavy favorite, Johnson also acknowledged the chaotic potential Moicano brings. Short-notice fights can be unpredictable, with limited time to devise a specific game plan. Moicano’s striking combinations and relentless pressure, according to Johnson, could force Makhachev into uncomfortable situations.
Speaking about the fight on his YouTube channel, Johnson said:

"Somebody from the Mighty team was like this card is worse. I don't think it is... I think it's a better fight, here's a reason why. You look at what 'Money' Moicano has done recently, he is on a terror because the man can't afford to lose. I think it's a tougher fight for Islam Makhachev. The reason is because, one, you have to do it within 24 hours. You have no idea what the game plan's going to be the whole thing changes but you know both those guys are well-rounded."
He added:
"Isam Makhachev is the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world. So he can fight anybody on any given day. But you do have to make some adjustments because the way that [Moicano] fights compared to what Arman does is different. I think it’s a better fight…I think it’s a tougher fight for Islam Makhachev..I feel Moicano is way more dangerous than Arman…He’s a f*cking dog, he’s gonna bring a dog fight”

Islam Makhachev responds to UFC 311 main event shakeup
Islam Makhachev recently addressed the sudden change to UFC 311’s main event. The Russian was originally slated to face Arman Tsarukyan in a highly-anticipated rematch. However, the UFC lightweight champion will now defend his title against Renato Moicano after Tsarukyan withdrew due to injury.
Makhachev, who defeated Tsarukyan in 2019, is gearing up to make his fourth title defense in Las Vegas. Rather than delaying the fight, Makhachev accepted the short-notice switch, showcasing his commitment as a champion.
The Dagestani took to X to share a statement, reflecting on a past quote of his that with Dana White's endorsement, stands immortalized on the walls of the UFC Performance Institute. Makhachev wrote:
"What does this title represent? It means you're the best in the world and if you're the best in the world, it doesn't matter who's going to be standing across from you. What do I say? No? NEVER. Let's do this!"
