Francis Ngannou's most recent fight witnessed him defeat Ciryl Gane via unanimous decision in their UFC heavyweight title unification fight in January 2022. Ngannou, the then-UFC heavyweight champion, subsequently went on hiatus due to knee injury issues and hasn't competed ever since.

Ngannou chose not to re-sign with the UFC and opted to pursue his boxing dream instead. Resultantly, the UFC stripped him of his title and released him in January 2023.

Earlier this month, boxing KO artist and former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder put forth a two-fight proposal for Francis Ngannou. Wilder suggested that he'd like to face Ngannou in a boxing match and then in an MMA bout as well.

In his response to Wilder, Ngannou insinuated that the veteran pugilist could very well be his next opponent. 'The Predator' has consistently indicated that he'd like his next fight to be a boxing match, which would mark his debut in the sport of boxing. Taking to his Twitter account, Ngannou seemingly accepted Wilder's challenge and wrote:

"Welcome to the free world @BronzeBomber. I hope you are a man of your word. See you soon #NgannouWilder"

Moreover, the widely-revered MMA fighter implied that he'll face 'The Bronze Bomber' only in boxing matches rather than MMA bouts. Jibing that Wilder might lose his limbs if they clash in an MMA fight, Ngannou tweeted:

"I said only boxing so he can keep his limbs like I said we will see if he’s a man of his word"

Francis Ngannou's next opponent and exact comeback date hasn't been officially announced yet. That said, he's likely to make his boxing debut in July. The consensus is that apart from a potential fight against Deontay Wilder, Ngannou is also looking at possibly fighting other top-tier heavyweight pugilists such as WBC and lineal heavyweight kingpin Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, and Derek Chisora.

Mike Tyson on Francis Ngannou's chances in a possible boxing match against Tyson Fury

Speaking to Radio Rahim earlier this year, Tyson Fury proposed a mixed-rules fight against Francis Ngannou with boxing legend 'Iron' Mike Tyson as the special guest referee. Highlighting 'The Predator's' free agency, Fury called for a big-money matchup against the MMA star. 'The Gyspy King' stated:

"Let's kick it up spicy, in a cage, four-ounce gloves, under Queensbury [boxing rules], and let's have a badass referee like Iron Mike Tyson."

TMZ Sports recently caught up with Mike Tyson and asked him about officiating a possible Ngannou-Fury fight. 'Iron' replied by simply noting, "You never know." In addition, Tyson implied that Ngannou shouldn't be counted out in a potential fight against Fury. Addressing Ngannou's chances against Fury, Tyson said:

"Anything is possible."
