Former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman's father, Muhammed Usman, served 10 years in a Texas prison. Colby Covington made sure to use that tidbit of Usman's life to poke fun at him in the lead-up to their second fight at UFC 268.

During a press conference for the event, 'Chaos' responded to Usman's claims of him breaking Covington's jaw during their first fight, saying:

"The only thing you broke was your daddy out of prison. Where’s that jailbird at? We need the scam artist here just like his son."

Kamaru Usman and his family moved to the United States when he was eight years old. In 2009, Muhammed Usman was taken into custody on account of multiple insurance claim frauds committed by his ambulance company.

Almost a year after his arrest, Muhammed was charged with 14 federal offenses and was sentenced to 180 months of imprisonment along with $1.3 million in restitution. However, 'The Nigerian Nightmare's father luckily only had to serve 10 years out of his 15-year sentence and was released in 2020.

Despite being found guilty by the court, Kamaru Usman still believes his father is innocent and was unfairly convicted for crimes he didn't commit. During the episode #59 of The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, he said:

"He owned like an ambulance company and… it was one of those situations where my dad hired the people that he thought were the right people to do what he didn’t know, the job to run his company… they run the company into the ground. Now because my dad was the owner of the company, they put it all on him."

Kamaru Usman makes a bold move to fastrack his way to a title shot

Kamaru Usman's back-to-back losses against Leon Edwards over the last one year have severely affected his chances of getting anothe crack at the UFC welterweight title, at least until 'Rocky' is the undisputed champion.

At 36 years of age, 'Nigerian Nightmare' is not getting younger and has a short window of time to stake claim at another title shot. Usman had been campaigning hard to get himself into a fight against the highly touted Khamzat Chimaev over the past few months.

However, the fight did not come to fruition. Chimaev was expected to fight Paulo Costa in the co-main event of UFC 294. However, Costa pulled out of the fight due to a severe staph infection. Kamaru Usman stepped up to fight 'Borz' on 11 days; notice.

Chimaev is considered among the brightest stars in the UFC today and very few fighters are capable of beating him even with a full camp. The oddsmakers do not have faith in Usman's ability to score a win at UFC 294 as he is a massive +260 underdog heading into the fight.

But if the former champion can pull off a victory, it will go down as one of the greatest career comebacks in UFC history.
