From the moment that he debuted in ONE Championship, Nico Carrillo was on the hunt for the bantamweight Muay Thai world championship.
The Scottish striker has proven himself to be one of the top contenders in the division by producing three wins all via stoppage.
On the same night that he was successful on his ONE Championship debut, the belt in his division changed hands.
Former flyweight champion Jonathan Haggerty stopped the dominant world titleholder Nong-O Hama in emphatic fashion to cause a shock upset in the main event of ONE Fight Night 9 last year.

Carrillo would also come up against the Thai legend in December of last year where he was also able to put Nong-O away after facing some adversity.
During fight week for ONE Fight Night 23, 'King of the North' responded to Haggerty's recent criticism of his last win at the end of 2023 where he claimed that Carrillo was nearly finished:
"Haggerty says I nearly got finished, but really, I didn't, did I? Did you see me take a knee? Did you see me looking like I wanted to quit? No, all I did was limp on my leg because it was hurt."
Nico Carrillo has one more hurdle to clear
Nico Carrillo has got just one more opponent to get past before he will surely challenge for the ONE bantamweight Muay Thai world championship.
Saemapetch Fairtex has faced many of the top names in the division during his time on the roster but Carrillo provides a very troublesome threat for the Thai veteran on July 5 at Lumpinee Stadium.
Should the Scotsman keep his undefeated record intact, you can be sure that he will be watching on very closely as Haggerty looks to defend his title at ONE 168 in Denver.
The inevitable clash between them is sure to be one of the biggest fights of the year when it does happen.
ONE Fight Night 23 will air live and free in US prime time for North American viewers with an active Prime Video subscription.
