Dustin Poirier's foot infection is seemingly on the wane given 'The Diamond' is expected to be released from the hospital soon. Renowned sports physician Dr. Brian Sutterer recently detailed that Poirier is lucky to be getting off without an amputation.
The UFC superstar recently expressed concern over his infection, which wasn't reacting to antibiotics. Sutterer noted that staph infections, which stop responding to regular antibiotics called Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), can be particularly lethal.
According to the sports physician, such infections can spread to the bones, leading to osteomyelitis or sepsis, resulting in amputations. Sutterer said on his YouTube channel:
"He's at that point where it looks like he'll be discharged home from the hospital. Dustin is fortunate here and hopefully this stays behind him. Because staph infections, particularly MRSA, can be fatal. They can spread to the bone and cause osteomyelitis, they can lead to amputations. If that bacteria gets into your bloodstream and spreads kind of throughout your body, you can become septic, which can be fatal. So MRSA is really no joke. It's a pretty common thing that we see."

Staph infections are certainly not to be taken lightly, as former middleweight champ Robert Whittaker will tell you. 'The Reaper' had a life-threatening situation back in 2018 after a staph in his stomach wasn't treated properly.
Conor McGregor jokes about Dustin Poirier's staph infection
Having already spent a couple of days in the hospital, Dustin Poirier recently revealed that his staph infection was getting serious. But that did not stop Conor McGregor from taking digs at his former rival.
'Notorious' teased that Poirier has gonorrhea and also accused 'The Diamond' of wearing dirty underwear. The Dubliner wrote on Twitter:
"Poirier has gonnorhea spread it around ahahhaahahah he’s a goner 😂😂"
"Heal up soon scruffy knickers" h/t Sportskeeda
Poirier responded by calling out McGregor for a fourth outing.
More recently, 'The Diamond' posted a graphic picture of his staph infection while also making light of the situation. The 33-year-old is responding to antibiotics again and hopes to be out of the hospital tomorrow.
