The UFC's 2024 competitive season featured several instant classics and remarkable performances. Dustin Poirier participated in two such memorable fights, facing Benoit Saint Denis and lightweight champion Islam Makhachev. The popular MMA content page Full Violence recently awarded Poirier the title of "Most Violent Fighter of the Year" for his outstanding performances.

In a recent Instagram post, Full Violence detailed Poirier's 2024 fights to explain why he was chosen over other fighters:

"Poirier fought fire with fire against Benoit Saint Denis, having everything to lose and not much to gain, knocking him out in devastating fashion."
"A month later, Poirier accepted a world title fight with Islam Makhachev on shorter notice than usual. Poirier made Makhachev bleed like nobody else before, making him look human at times with his grit and will to win... Poirier eventually lost bu there is no arguing how big of a dog he was in those five rounds."

After losing the ceremonial BMF title fight against Justin Gaethje at UFC 291 in July 2023, Poirier acknowledged that he was in a challenging position professionally. Social media reactions following his loss indicated that fans were not optimistic about his competitive future. However, his resurgent performances against Saint Denis and Makhachev helped change that perception.

Dustin Poirier hints at his last fight in a social media post

Dustin Poirier's recent performances demonstrated that he is still capable of competing at an elite level, but he seems to have made up his mind about retirement.

In recent months, the 35-year-old has expressed the desire to fight one last time before officially retiring from professional MMA. In response to a social media post, he hinted that he would be interested in a trilogy fight against Max Holloway for the BMF title.

Poirier recently took to Instagram to suggest that a fight announcement is coming soon. However, he did not reveal the name of his potential next opponent.

The caption to Poirier's post read:

Poirier is widely regarded as one of the best fighters in UFC history who never won the undisputed title. He came up short in three title opportunities, facing Khabib Nurmagomedov, Charles Oliveira, and most recently, Islam Makhachev. However, the Louisiana native won the interim lightweight title by defeating Max Holloway at UFC 236 in 2019.

Poirier has created a lasting legacy in the sport with his iconic fights against elite fighters such as Holloway, Justin Gaethje, Eddie Alvarez, Michael Chandler, and Dan Hooker, among others.
