Dustin Poirier's coach talks pupil's risky guillotine plan against Islam Makhachev for UFC 302: "The internet will blow up"

Dustin Poirier's coach recently weighed in on his pupil's risky strategy as he prepares to challenge Islam Makhachev for the lightweight championship at UFC 302 this Saturday. He noted that the Louisiana native appears committed to shocking the world and proving that he can submit the Dagestani with a guillotine choke.

'The Diamond' has been open about his game plan against the reigning lightweight champion, claiming that he will attempt a jumping guillotine choke. He made several attempts to do so in his previous bout against Benoit Saint Denis despite his coach's instructions otherwise, but eventually earned a knockout win.

During his appearance on today's episode of The MMA Hour, coach Mike Brown shared his thoughts on the Louisiana native's intentions for UFC 302. He mentioned that he believes it would be a viral moment should Poirier submit Makhachev with a guillotine choke to win the lightweight title. He said:

"This conversation [about the guillotine], this argument hasn't been going on just since this last fight. This has been going on for a decade...[If he hits it and wins] Maybe the earth is going to blow up. The internet will blow up, that's for damn sure."

Dustin Poirier's coach recently opened up about the stylistic matchup between his pupil and Islam Makhachev, while noting that he believes there will be openings for them.

Despite Makhachev's recent performances including his knockout win over Alexander Volkanovski, Poirier's coach Mike Brown likes the matchup. During the aforementioned appearance, he mentioned that he believes there are areas in which 'The Diamond' can exploit. Brown said:

"There's a lot of things about this fight, you know, that I like stylistically. There are a lot of openings that the team sees and 'DP' can capitalize. It's just about being on and being sharp in those 25 minutes."
