Dustin Poirier's fight against Islam Makhachev could have been jeopardized due to an injury he sustained during training. He revealed that his wife Jolie Poirier, wanted him to back out of the fight.

Poirier made his third attempt at the UFC gold when he squared off against Makhachev in the main event of UFC 302. The sixth pay-per-view of the year took place on June 1 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

Both fighters put up an impressive performance but in the last round, Makhachev submitted Poirier via a D'Arce choke to retain his lightweight title.

During a recent appearance on The MMA Hour, Poirier spoke to Ariel Helwani and revealed that he injured himself while preparing for the Makhachev fight. He said:

''I busted my ribs in camp, but ofcourse I don't wanna like talk about that, I don't think it change anything or the way I fought, but yeah, I smashed my ribs up bad.''

In response to being asked whether he wanted to pull out of the fight, Poirier disclosed that, although he didn't, his wife did:

''Just my wife wanted me to, but I wasn't gonna. I was halfway through the training camp and I'm fighting for the lightweight title, I wasn't gonna pull out.''

The same was previously disclosed by Yves Edwards, Poirier's longtime friend and training partner at American Top Team, who said that 'The Diamond' was unable to grapple for several weeks before the title fight.

'Thugjitsu Master' made the following statement in an interview with RJ Clifford of MMA Today:

''Nobody knows this and he's [Poirier] probably going to be like, 'Why'd you put that out there?' I know Makhachev was also not 100 percent. Nobody goes into a fight 100 percent, but he hurt his ribs like two weeks before the fight and hadn't wrestled or grappled for two and a half weeks."

Dustin Poirier defends his wife from a fan

Dustin Poirier had to defend his wife Jolie Poirier again. 'The Diamond' has found himself in the middle of an X spat with a fan this time. Following his defeat to Islam Makakhchev at UFC 302, the Louisiana native took to social media to share footage from his pre-fight interview with Brendan Schaub, in which he discussed the influence his wife has had on his life and career.

One fan reacted negatively to Poirier's message, despite its touching nature. The fan criticized Poirier's portrayal of his wife, claiming that Poirier exaggerated her importance in his life. He reacted by saying:

"You a h*e and a half"
