An interesting exchange between Dustin Poirier and Dan Hooker unfolded on X today. It started when Poirier, seemingly looking for the most exciting and memorable match-up for his next fight, tweeted the single word "Trilogy?". It seemed the Louisiana native is vying for a third fight with Justin Gaethje, whom he won Fight of the Year honors in 2018.
Suggesting a different route for 'The Diamond', 'The Hangman' mirrored his tweet with a single word:
"Rematch."

In response, Poirier sent a stern warning to Hooker, whom he beat in a Fight of the Night-worthy battle in 2020, saying:
"You Don't really want that @danthehangman"
As of this writing, neither Hooker nor Gaethje have responded to Poirier's tweets yet. 'The Hangman' is coming off a marvelous decision win over Mateusz Gamrot at UFC 305 in Perth Australia. As for Poirier, the former interim UFC lightweight champion failed in his attempt at winning undisputed gold against Islam Makhachev at UFC 302.
Weighing down possible next match-ups for Dustin Poirier
There are a few more fights for Dustin Poirier that could produce just as much action and excitement. Despite only winning two of his last five bouts inside the octagon, the Louisiana native still holds the no. 4 spot in the UFC lightweight rankings. Add this to the fact that he is already a household name, anyone below the top 10 wouldn't make much sense for 'The Diamond'.
Two great match-ups are no. 7-ranked Beneil Dariush and no. 9-ranked Rafael Fiziev. Both men are exciting, blood-and-guts warriors and can produce highlight reel-worthy bouts. They're also two of the men Poirier hasn't faced in the top 10 yet. Additionally, both Fiziev and Dariush are also coming off losses and have been away from the octagon for nearly a year.
One wildcard match-up is no. 15-ranked Paddy Pimblett who, despite his ranking, arguably has more following than most of the men in the top 10. Paddy 'The Baddy' mirrors the star power of Conor McGregor, whom Dustin Poirier had an epic trilogy with. A bout with Pimblett might produce the same level of hype.
