Joe Rogan recently claimed that the American government sent Ukraine $6 billion by accident and questioned why $5 billion couldn't be spared to rebuild Maui after devastating wildfires that ravaged the Hawaiin island in August 2023.

During an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience podcast with Shane Gillis, Ari Shaffir and Mark Normand (JRE #2256), Rogan said:

"All it would have taken is $5B to rebuild Maui, and they 'accidentally' paid an extra $6B to Ukraine. We keep sending money to these other countries. Even if you're supporting Ukraine, I'm still saying they 'accidentally' sent $6B there, and no one cared, and they didn't send $5B to Maui, and they could have.”

Did USA "accidentally" send Ukraine $6 billion aid as Joe Rogan claims?

No, the USA did not "accidentally" send Ukraine $6 billion in military aid, and Joe Rogan misunderstood a Pentagon announcement that clarified the issue.

According to an Associated Press report, in June 2023, the Pentagon announced that it had overestimated the value of weapons sent to Ukraine by $6.2 billion. This means that more weapons could be sent in the future without requiring congressional approval. The report further clarified that an accounting error was caused by calculating the value of equipment taken from Pentagon stock using replacement costs instead of book values.

Another report by Reuters confirmed the same and pointed out that the Pentagon spokesperson's briefing video was clipped and widely shared on social media with misleading captions suggesting that the USA sent Ukraine $6 billion by accident.

Rogan has notably made similar claims in the past. The famous podcaster hosted Hawaiin politician Tulsi Gabbard and UFC icon B.J. Penn on his show in September 2023, and the trio discussed the Maui wildfires. During their conversation, Rogan iterated the $6 billion claims and questioned the allocation of funds.
