Khamzat Chimaev might not be booked for an upcoming fight right now, but the UFC sensation is clearly training hard. Most recently, ‘Borz’ was captured on video destroying an overmatched sparring partner, delivering a flurry of largely undefended strikes to him.
While Khamzat Chimaev looked aggressive in this video, it didn’t take some fans too long at all to question the quality of his training partner.
Twitter user @Grapegone posted footage of the sparring session, which saw Chimaev and his training partner exchanging shots without protective headgear, and stated “New Kahamzat (sic) sparring footage and I believe that welterweight and middleweight is truly f*cked.”

Unfortunately, while this user seemed impressed with Chimaev’s work, the same cannot be said for a number of fans commenting on the footage.
While the majority of commentators on Twitter focused on the apparent lack of quality in Chimaev’s sparring partner, one user posted something more interesting.
He pointed out that ‘Borz’ appeared to be lacking head movement while throwing combinations, something that allowed Gilbert Burns to have some success against him in their bout at UFC 273.
On YouTube, meanwhile, the focus remained largely on the sparring partner.
“They literally paid that guy to be a walking talking punching bag.”
“That’s crazy, that guy was at my door like half an hour ago delivering my UberEats. Had no idea he had just came from sparring with Khamzat.”
“He’s fighting an out of shape dude, by the looks of it. And I like Chimaev.”
Similarly to Twitter, though, at least one user spotted something useful in the clip – particularly to any prospective foes of Chimaev watching.
“If you actually examine it properly Fatty was catching Khamzat with nearly every counter and shot he threw and he was only going at 50% not being overly aggressive and just sparring.”
Who is Khamzat Chimaev likely to face off with next?
Khamzat Chimaev has not fought in the UFC since last September. Initially booked to face Nate Diaz in the welterweight headliner of UFC 279, ‘Borz’ instead missed weight and ended up fighting Kevin Holland at 185lbs instead.
Chimaev easily defeated Holland via first-round submission, but despite taking no damage in the fight, he has not been booked since.
So when will the Chechnyan fight again? The most recent suggestion from UFC President Dana White was that he will be competing at 185lbs in his next bout, and that he should be fighting “top 3 guys in the world.”
One fighter he isn’t likely to face, though, is current UFC middleweight kingpin Alex Pereira. In a recent interview prior to his title defense against Israel Adesanya, ‘Poatan’ seemed to pass on the idea of Chimaev as a prospective opponent, labeling him “a little lost”.
With any luck, we’ll hear more about Khamzat Chimaev’s next fight soon.
