Martin Nguyen won his first world title in 2017, knocking out Marat Gafurov to win the ONE featherweight world championship. He’d immediately move up to lightweight to face Eduard Folayang, knocking him out as well and becoming a double world champion.
Nguyen is slated to fight at ONE Fight Night 7 this weekend and has had quite the wild week. Originally scheduled to meet 13-0 Shamil Gasanov, the Russian bowed out of the fight last week and was replaced by Krygyz fighter Razhab Shaydullaev.
When Shaydullaev also dropped out of the fight, ONE called up 9-2 Brazilian Leonardo Casotti from the Friday Fights show to fight the Australian. Nguyen suddenly finds himself in a must-win situation against a late-notice opponent in a different stage in his career, and Casotti has the chance to beat a former double world champion.
Amidst chaotic fight week, Martin Nguyen says he is fully prepared for anything his opponent throws his way
If Martin Nguyen wasn’t such a seasoned veteran, the chaos of the week and an unfamiliar opponent may have thrown him off his game.
He feels that he should be ready for anything Leonardo Casotti tries, and knows that he can bounce back from any precarious situation, as he explained in his pre-fight interview for ONE Fight Night 7. He said:
"So I tried not to let myself get to the worst-case scenario situations. If I ever get into a troubled position or anything like that, I know in the back of my mind that I don't have a problem. I'm getting out. I'm not being submitted or getting taken down and then getting back up. This is why we prepare for everything when it comes to a fight."
The 33-year-old trains out of south Florida’s Kill Cliff FC with many of the best fighters in the world pushing him to the limit. Nguyen will fight Leonardo Casotti on the main card of ONE Fight Night 7, which airs on Friday night in US prime time, streaming on Amazon Prime for North American subscribers.
