A former UFC champion recently recalled his attempts at securing a title fight against Georges St-Pierre following his impressive comeback. The Canadian returned following a four-year layoff and submitted Michael Bisping to win the middleweight championship and joined the list of legends to win a title in two divisions.
The middleweight division was stacked with several contenders vying for their opportunity including Robert Whittaker and Yoel Romero, who had surged up the rankings. In addition to the contenders looking to earn their opportunity, former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold was also eager to get back in the mix and regain his title.
At the time, 'Rush' remained open to competing again but there was doubt about his future at 185 pounds. During the latest episode of JAXXON PODCAST, Rockhold recalled making attempts at earning a middleweight title shot against former foe Michael Bisping and then St-Pierre, but was unsuccessful because the Canadian had no interest remaining in the division.
"I was trying to fight [Michael Bisping a third time]. I remember Georges St-Pierre even after that fight [with Bisping], I was publicly coming at Georges cause he was just sitting there and I knew he wouldn't fight Yoel [Romero]. I knew he wouldn't fight Robert [Whittaker]. I knew he wouldn't fight me. I was like, 'What the fu*k, dude'...I think Georges, he called 'DC' like, 'Tell Luke I'm leaving the title, he gets it.'" When did Georges St-Pierre win the UFC middleweight championship
After taking a hiatus from MMA in 2013, Georges St-Pierre was motivated to accomplish another goal for his incredible legacy in the sport by moving up to 185 pounds and winning the UFC middleweight championship.
St-Pierre got his wish as he was granted an immediate title shot against Michael Bisping in the main event of UFC 217 in November 2017. The event took place at Madison Square Garden and saw the Canadian drop Bisping with a left-hook and went on to submit him with a rear-naked choke at the 4:23 mark of the third round.
