Glover Teixeira's cornerman retires after attempting to call off UFC 283 clash against Jamahal Hill

Glover Teixeira and Jamahal Hill delivered an enthralling five-round title fight at UFC 283, with Hill emerging victorious via decision. Teixeira subsequently announced his retirement from MMA.

Interestingly, the 43-year-old Brazilian wasn't the only one to retire on the night. Teixeira's longtime coach and cornerman John Hackleman recently revealed that he will not be cornering any fights in the future and iterated his intention to focus on coaching instead.

In an interview with MMA Fighting, the veteran coach revealed that he intends to step away from cornering fights and also claimed that if he had his way, the UFC 283 headliner would not have progressed beyond the fourth round. Speaking about Teixeira's loss to Hill, Hackleman said:

“I’m a known fight-stopper in between rounds... But I thought this was a good time to stop it. I was outvoted in the corner... I’m thankful they didn’t."

He went on to announce his retirement, saying:

"That’s my last cornering, I’m never going to work a corner again.”

Jamahal Hill on Glover Teixeira's toughness

Jamahal Hill captured the vacant UFC light heavyweight title in dominant fashion, thoroughly outclassing Glover Teixeira over five rounds at UFC 283. The 31-year-old became the first fighter from Dana White's Contender Series to win UFC gold.

Hill is among the hardest punchers in the light heavyweight division. Going into the fight, many believed that if the American landed clean on his counterpart's chin, the fight wouldn't last very long.

However, 'Sweet Dreams' did not have it easy against Teixeira and has nothing but praise for the Brazilian's commendable performance at the Jeunesse Arena this past weekend. In an interview with MMA Junkie, Hill claimed that he was blown away by Teixeira's toughness:

"It was a hell of an opponent, a legendary Hall of Famer. The dude’s toughness is understated. He’s not just tough, he was tough, and he was actively doing the right things to try to win the fight. He was still active. He was still throwing. He was still looking to get a dominant position. The entire time, he never once wore the pain of the fight."
